Objective: Analyze the benefits of low glycemic index diets in the control of glycemia and weight loss of type 2 diabetics. Methods: A literature review related to the topic was carried out over the last 10 years in the databases Scielo, Bireme, Cochraine Library and Pubmed, obtaining a total of 13 randomized clinical trials. Results: There was a relation between low glycemic index and glycemic control, represented by HbA1C and weight loss in individuals with T2DM. The studies analyzed obtained results with great differences due to the several diets used as comparison, besides being studies in the threshold of relevant methodological quality. Conclusion: Better studies are needed to identify the true effect of the low glycemic index diet on glycemic control and weight loss in individuals with T2DM.3
